The Boval Hut is a very typical Swiss Alpine Club hut, built in 1877, and later renovated. It sits at the base of Piz Morteratsch and Piz Bernina, above the Morteratsch Glacier, and is a nice, easy outing for a medium to short hike from Pontresina.
You start with a short train ride to the Morteratsch stop (you can also walk from Pontresina in about an hour), where there is a train station, restaurant and hotel. The Morteratsch glacier reaches all the way down to the valley floor here, and although it has receded dramatically in the last century, it’s still one of the more accessible glaciers in the area. You can walk along the relatively flat valley floor where signs show the extent of the glacier every 10 years, and can even walk up to the glacier itself (be careful).
The trail to the hut starts from very near the train station and heads up the western moraine wall (your right as you enter the valley) on a steady ascent. It’s 600 meters up, about 2000 ft, and for most people this will take about 2 hours of steady climbing. The views are gorgeous, and the food and drink at the hut is welcome and filling. Have lunch and return the way you came.
Pontresina is small and modest, yet alive and stylish without being overwhelming. It’s just a few miles from St. Moritz, and is set off the main highway so its main street remains calm and peaceful.
